Photo & Film Expo 2014
Photo & Film Expo 2014
The best weekend of the year, at least for photographers that is, is almost upon us!  Many photographers and enthusiasts, including myself, block this weekend off to attend the fabulous Photo & Film expo at the dome.

Running from the 30th of October, to the 2nd of November, this is an event not to be missed.  From new products and great specials, to workshops that cover almost every genre of photography there is something for everyone.

This year though, it is even more exciting for me .... I was asked to present a talk and live demo on boudoir photography for femme fatale boudoir.  I will be discussing basic posing and using continous lighting to create soft sensual and elegant boudoir images.  So should you want to learn a bit about boudoir photography, pick up some tips or just see what its all about, come and visit me on the Fotacs stage.

I will be talking once every day, each with a slightly different theme and look.  Here is the dates and times I will be doing the demos, so put them in your diary!
  • Thursday 30th Oct  @  11h30
  • Friday 31st Oct  @  14h30
  • Saturday 1st Nov  @  10h00
  • Sunday 2nd Nov  @  13h00
Looking forward to seeing you there!

Planning your Wedding Day - Lingerie Tips

Vanita Italian Bridal Lingerie
We all know that if you wear sexy lingerie, you immediately feel sexy the whole day, and there is no better time than your Wedding Day to feel sexy and glamorous!

We are bombarded with ideas from the Movies, and we all have the romantic notion of the groom taking our Wedding Dress off and there is a sexy something underneath.  The problem is, not all of these sexy little things are practical, so I chatted to the lovely ladies from Vanita Italian Bridal Lingerie and Hosiery and asked them to give a few tips on choosing the right lingerie for your Wedding day.

Bridal lingerie is sometimes overlooked with all the focus on the wedding dress, but for many years to come, your lingerie will still remind you of this special time together. It is very important to have the correct support and be comfortable under the beautiful Wedding Dress you spent so much money on.

Choosing the right style
You want to focus on what part of your body you feel is your best asset and emphasize it. There are so many styles out there, selecting one can be overwhelming! Choose something that you feel comfortable in—that is so very important. You must feel comfortable with your body to feel good about yourself. Corsets and bodies sculpt your figure to make you feel confident.

Colour of Lingerie
Match the colour of your bra to the colour of your skin or the colour of the dress. Otherwise, it may show through the fabric. Ivory and nude is always a good choice!

What type of Lingerie should I go for on my Wedding Day?
There are two types of bridal lingerie: what you wear for your wedding day, and what you wear for your wedding night. For the ceremony itself, focus undergarments that offer comfort and support. When you and your new husband can enjoy some alone time, slip into something with a little more edge. Ribbons, lace, and other seductive details may ruin your smooth silhouette during the ceremony. Save these details for when you and your new husband can enjoy each other privately.

Create a smooth silhouette.
Look for seamless bras, especially if you have a gown made of lightweight fabric. You might be able to get away with a standard bra if your gown is made of heavier material, but you must make sure that no straps or other lines show through.

Focus on support
During your ceremony, support and comfort are more important than sexiness. The last thing you need on your big day is to worry about sagging or falling out of your gown. Make sure that the lingerie is lined with soft cottons or something similar, so that it feels delicate on the skin.

Wear comfortable panties during the ceremony
You won't be able to re-adjust creeping panties while you say your vows, so if you choose something uncomfortable, you'll have to stay uncomfortable. Since weddings and receptions can take a while, this is best avoided. Wear a panty style you know you feel comfortable in rather than choosing a different type for the sake of being sultry.

Hosiery options
Keep things simple with sheer pantyhose. A standard nude pantyhose smoothes out your legs for the ceremony. It may not be the sultriest of options, but it will promote a smooth silhouette.

Create a sexier look with garter belts and stockings. Some brides can get away with this during the wedding if they have a full skirt, but otherwise, you can easily slip into this for the wedding night. Garters and garter belts are also a good option.

Bridal lingerie Checklist:
Make a checklist of the lingerie you need. Doing so may help reduce your stress level, since you already have a lot to remember as you plan your big day.

Here is what Vanita’ suggest:
*Ceremony bra
*Wedding night bra
*Ceremony panties
*Wedding night panties
*Hosiery
*Garter belt
*Slimmers and shapers
*Corset, bustier

Planning your Wedding day - Make-up Tips

3/15/2013

As a wedding photographer I often get asked many questions about the “Big Day” and things that will make it less stressful and more beautiful.  As weddings are expensive, and most of us don’t realise how much they really do cost until you decide to tie the knot, we generally try to cut a few corners to make it more affordable.  There are a few things I believe are very important and shouldn’t be overlooked.

The one thing I find that Brides often cut first is Make-up.  Us ladies all know how to put make-up on don’t we?  Most of us wear it every day for work, and our trusty brands we buy from chemists or clothing stores really do the job!  Well actually this is pretty far from the truth.  We know how to do every day make-up application, and what most ladies don’t realise is that this does not look great on camera.
Picture
Top Tip!

If you want to go for a facial, make sure it is at least 4 weeks before the wedding so that all impurities are not visible on the wedding day

Monique
The normal foundations we buy have an SPF sunscreen in them, and while this is great for everyday use and protects our skin, on your wedding day when your photographer, friends and family are taking photographs that sunscreen reflects light.  So you suddenly end up with a very white face in all of the images, and this makes it look like you have greasy skin …. A definite NO for your wedding photos which you will cherish for the rest of your life!  Professional foundation is formulated to prevent this and your Make-up Artist knows how to apply it correctly and smoothly to remove imperfections and make your skin look flawless.   Professional Make-up Artists have been trained to make you look amazing, they use little tricks to accentuate your best features and hide the things we all don’t like, like the dreaded dark rings under your eyes.
Your eyes are the window to your soul, and lovely lashes help to frame your eyes and make them more beautiful.  I am personally not a fan of strip lashes, although I do ask for them to be used during short photo-shoots like fashion or boudoir.   They don’t work well for weddings as they have a bit of a fake feel and may come off with the tears of happiness.  Spoil yourself with a set of individual lashes, the Make-up artist applies them individually to each eyelash and they last until your lash falls out naturally.  These are really lovely and natural looking but still give us ladies the long lashes we crave.  Organise to do this a few days before your wedding so you can get used to them and don’t have additional pressure on your wedding day.
Top Tip!

Don't apply any new creams or facial products to your skin within the week leading up to your wedding day.

Shandre

Top Tip!

Brides should avoid wearing makeup the day before the wedding and on the wedding day, so that the makeup artist can have fresh clear skin to work with.

Monique

Some comments I have gotten from brides-to-be is that they want to look natural and they don’t feel they get this with professional Make-up, or that the make-up feels a bit too heavy.  My suggestion here is talk to the Make-up Artists, tell them your concerns and ask how they can make it suit your needs.  They are a service provider, and they definitely want to make you look amazing!  The two Make-up Artists I work with regularly (Monique and Shandre) are both wonderful and friendly, and will always try to accommodate you.  One thing to bear in mind though, camera ready make-up is a little heavier than our normal day-to-day make-up, but it is definitely worth it.

Do not rely on Photoshop to create the perfect look for you.  Great edited images result from great starting material!  If we have to edit the images in Photoshop too much you will end up looking plastic like a Barbie Doll!
Choosing a Make-up Artist is the same as choosing a photographer!  Look at their work; decide if you love what they do and choose the supplier that can offer you everything you want.  You choose a supplier because you love their work, not just on price!

As Make-up artists use the professional ranges of Make-up, they know that it will last for the whole day. You will look radiant and have wonderful images from start to finish.  This day is a special day, so go ahead and relax, get pampered, feel and look great – Book a Professional Make-up Artist!

Top Tip!

Make sure you get lots of rest the night before your wedding to prevent puffy eyes or dark circles on your special day.

A few more tips from Monique:
  • Brides should brush their teeth before the makeup artists starts with you makeup on your wedding day.
  • Make sure the MUA uses waterproof makeup as the brides becomes teary eyed on her wedding day.
  • Make sure your bridesmaid has your favourite colour lipstick or lip gloss for touch ups.

A few more tips from Shandre:
  • Drink plenty of water to ensure your skin is well hydrated and looking radiant.
  • Give your Bridesmaid your compact powder to touchup with on the day of the wedding. A compact powder is preferable, as lose powder tends to fall on the dress.
  • Always have a few tissues and cotton buds with you or ask a bridesmaid to keep them for you. These are to dab your eyes when those tears of joy fall.

Robyn's Boudoir Shoot - Thinking outside of the box!

3/26/2012

The thing I love most about photography is my clients, and this extends from both the wedding photography to the boudoir photography.  Sometimes people think it is strange that we specialise in a specific area, but it takes a lot of time and patience to develop the skills to do the photography.

I am specialising in two area's that are very close to my heart .... Wedding photography, as I just love the romance and detail of a wedding day.  It is one of the most challenging forms of photography as we need to deal with what you have on the day.  This could be bad weather to changing light conditions or even strange events happening during the day.  Boudoir photography is my other love, as I believe all women are beautiful and can boost their self image but seeing themselves looking sensual, glamourous and beautiful.

The reason I am mentioning this in this post, is, when Robyn came to our boudoir marathon, I immediately thought that this is a different and exciting lady to work with.  Not many people are comfortable to sit in their lingerie outside, but Robyn was!  There was an awesome hole in the wall outside which I was dying to photograph, with lots of help from our MUA Shandre (who held the reflector) and Shelley (who was shooting with me) we got amazing photographs.  The way we had to photograph this was definitely not traditional boudoir, and it was dealing with the same conditions for a wedding.  Great thinking out of the box ladies, and dealing with the different situation!

Not satisfied there, Robyn was ready to give us sultry attitude and even was prepared to do implied nude photography.  What a stunning lady to work with, I hope to work with you again!

The Lovely Portia - Her Boudoir shoot!

I met Portia at the boudoir party with Shelley Burt and Shandre Araujo, and I have to say she is such a lovely lady!  Not only is she stunning with a beautiful body and sultry eyes, but such a lady as well.

Even if you are shy and scared to dress in lingerie, the boudoir shoot is rather liberating.  As a photographer, it really makes it worth my while when a lady can tell me that this shoot has boosted her self image and confidence!  If this is to spice up your relationship or just as a fun thing to do for yourself, it is something I would highly recommend!

Due to our success and popular demand we are definitely going to do another boudoir party soon!

A few more images from our boudoir shoot on Saturday.  Should anyone want details of Shandre, our make-up artist please let me know.  The work she did with Sam is breath-taking!

Sam walked into our shoot, the most relaxed I have ever seen some one before a shoot where you "get your kit off".  Her relaxed but sultry attitude and wonderful fun personality made photographing her an absolute pleasure.  Have a look at some of her photos!

Boudoir Marathon - March 2012

Last Saturday, I had the most amazing day with a very talented boudoir photographer, my friend Shelley Burt - Pretty Boudoir, and the best make-up artist I have worked with, Shandre - Make-up by Shandre.  We embarked on a Boudoir marathon which meant we had 6 models to photograph in 6 hours.

We chose a stunning location, The Wesley in Bryanston as it is both beautiful and romantic - perfect for boudoir!  It was a challenging but fun day, and I got to meet so many beautiful young ladies.  Here is a sneak peak of the first model we worked with on the day .... The lovely Erica.

Thank you all for making this a very special event!

Quirky and often described as rather eccentric, I am a lover of all things beautiful.  Capturing special moments and making my clients look and feel beautiful is what makes me happy!
